Soaring eagle

With a wingspan of up to 2.5 metres, the distinctive raptor is easily identified by its wedge-shaped tail and legs feathered down to its feet. Observed throughout mainland Australia and in the island state of Tasmania, it can soar tirelessly for hours at altitudes of 2,000 metres and beyond on thermal air currents rising from Australia’s sun-baked terrain.

Ultra high relief strike

The coin’s ultra high relief design portrays a standing wedge-tailed eagle with outstretched wings. Included on the reverse is the inscription ‘AUSTRALIAN WEDGE-TAILED EAGLE’, The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark, and the coin’s weight, purity, and 2025 year-date.

The coin’s ultra high relief reverse is minted on a concave surface to ensure the optimum flow of metal is achieved by the strike of the die.

This is the tenth wedge-tailed eagle design for The Perth Mint by renowned American sculptor and engraver, John M. Mercanti. As 12th Chief Engraver of the US Mint, John Mercanti produced more coin and medal designs than any other employee in the organisation’s history.

Presentation packaging

The coin is housed in a classic grey leatherette display case and is accompanied by a numbered certificate of authenticity.
