According to tradition, in 1801, soldier and pastoralist James Brumby had to release several horses into the bush when he was transferred from Sydney to Van Diemen’s Land. These horses, known initially as Brumby’s horses, later became known as ‘brumbies,’ referring to wild horses.

Today, mobs of brumbies, especially those roaming the Australian Alps, are believed to be descended from these lost, abandoned, or escaped horses, many of which originally belonged to early British settlers like Brumby.

The brumby, thriving in the harsh environment, has become a national icon, symbolizing the spirit of freedom and resilience that many associate with the Australian character.

DESIGN

The special ‘P125’ anniversary mintmark is featured on the 2024 Brumby coin, which also portrays the effigy of His Majesty King Charles III. The 'P' mintmark and the Queen Elizabeth II Memorial Obverse appear on the other year Brumby coins.

Authentication feature

The coin incorporates an authentication feature on the reverse. In the form of a micro-laser engraved letter, it is only detectable under a magnifying glass.
